In the course of my career the cultural requirements dictating interior spaces have changed greatly. No longer are there physical separations between serving spaces and living spaces. Many remodels are undertaken to remove walls, creating a Great Room. Combining serving spaces with living spaces is a wonderful concept, allowing all members of the household to gather together. But often these large spaces lack the human scale elements needed to make them cozy. To solve this problem, I define uses within the room with casework, level changes, nooks and ceiling definition.
Your home may already have a Great Room. You may have learned that putting all activity into one room does not accommodate differing noise levels of activities within the space. I will discuss with you your household's habits and activities in an attempt to identify the competing noise levels. We will devise a scheme to provide separate, appropriately sized areas or rooms to allow those uses to exist without conflict. The result may be a reading room, or a home theater, an art studio, or a music room.
Our busy lifestyles and more flexible roles in the household have combined to open the way for design of beautiful work spaces within the home. A kitchen is no longer designed for one person, using an efficiency triangle. Instead it is often designed with work stations, each with efficiency of motion in mind, but allowing for more than one cook, even guests, to participate in the creation of meals. I will discuss with you the particular needs you have for your home office, and together we will create one that is as complex as a separate room or outbuilding, or as simple as a window seat in a bay window facing your garden.
Finally, the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) has emerged as the new asset to the single family home. These efficiency spaces can be additions to existing buildings, conversions of ground floor spaces, or new outbuildings. If this is something that you are looking for, we can discuss the advantages to each of these options and the impacts they will have on your particular residence.
